Christina Pluhar and her remarkable ensemble LâArpeggiata has a new project: âTragic and comic stories by and about heroines, saints, witches, sorceresses, and mere mortalsâŠ"
The new opus âWonder Womenâ by LâArpeggiata and Christina Pluhar is dedicated to women.
On the one hand, it is a homage to all the wonderful female composers of the 17th century, but also to all the talented female musicians of all times who too often had to hide their talent behind their husbands or give up their careers too early.
On the other hand, Christina Pluhar also draws her inspiration from the traditional music of South America and Italy and looked for songs that tell stories about extraordinary, strong, courageous but also sad women.
First and foremost is the wonderful Mexican song âLa Brujaâ (The Witch), which symbolizes the freedom of all women at all times and in all cultures.
Celebrate women in all their facets and with all their talents together with Luciana Mancini, CĂ©line Scheen, Benedetta Mazzucato, Vincenzo Capezzuto, Christina Pluhar and LâArpeggiata.
From Gramophone: The booklet notes open with declamatory words by Maddalena Casulana, the 16th-century composer, lutenist and singer: âI wish ⊠to also show the world (to the degree that it is granted to me in my profession as a musician) the foolish error of men who so believe themselves to be the masters of high intellectual gifts that it seems to them these cannot be equally common among women.â A Renaissance wonderwoman indeed; but instead of wearing a cape, she plays a lute.
LâArpeggiata director Christina Pluhar is cut from the same cloth. Weâre told that the album is a tribute to female composers of the 17th century as well as a celebration of âall aspects of womanhood, and women with all their talentsâ. Thereâs music, as you might expect, from now-household names Francesca Caccini, Barbara Strozzi and Isabella Leonarda. But there are also wonderful surprises in the mix, including traditional songs from Mexico and Italy â and seven arrangements by Pluhar. Much narrative ground is covered, too, with everything from heroines to sorceresses.
All four vocal soloists are exceptional. Soprano CĂ©line Scheen in Strozziâs Che si puĂČ fare? is an obvious highlight. This lovelorn lament is actually sung from a male perspective; Scheenâs excellent controlled vibrato brings a tenderness to the characterâs distress. Mezzo-soprano Benedetta Mazzucato is equally stunning in Leonardaâs Nive puer. Her effortless melisma brings to life the exquisite word-painting on âcantansâ, and if you could bottle the sound of her humming, the cupboards of parents dealing with newborns would be full. Mazzucatoâs clarity is perfect in conjuring the frost-sparkled scene (the text of the recitative is especially delightful, describing how Mary âsprinkled melodies among her sighsâ as she rocked the baby Jesus to sleep). The performances by male alto Vincenzo Capezzuto are remarkable. Capezzutoâs personal website claims that his voice âescapes any kind of classificationâ, and indeed, timbre and tessitura are excellently explored here to conjure what the author of the booklet notes calls âgender porosityâ.
There are ridiculous musical moments â from Manuel Barretoâs fabulously ostentatious harp-playing that spills into camp celebration in the albumâs opening track, to the sensual double-bass pizzicato in the traditional Mexican song âLa Lloronaâ. But if you know the larger-than-life Pluhar, this all makes utter sense. Such timbral and textural detail is always a strength of LâArpeggiata; Pluharâs attention to plucked and percussive resonance is so strong in evocation (although I donât know if I love or hate the percussion in Nive puer). There are the usual swirling chaconne bass lines that weâve come to expect and love from LâArpeggiata, and the quiet rhythmic funk of âLa Lloroncitaâ is exactly what is needed to break the spell.
