August 15th is the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a holy day that has lent much great music to our vocal tradition.
Our dear friend Suzi Digby is back with her latest project building on that foundation, in a two-CD recording that takes us from plainchant, to the Renaissance (Palestrina, Guerrero, Anerio), and to her ongoing work seeking new pieces that build on the old from a variety of living composers.
She shares that with us on a special program she has graciously allowed us to post below, plus sent along both the recording and a number of downloads for any new members, gift memberships, or those who wish to use a Preservation Grant to make an older program accessible to all.
The latter is particularly relevant right now. Along with our technical director, Christopher Drummond, we went back to the Public Broadcasting Archives, this time with a mighty van, and loaded what was to have been twenty-odd boxes of old programs.
As it turned out, when they went even deeper in the archives, they uncovered more than three times that many boxes. A newly-refurbished reel-to-reel tape player calculated exactly for those particular tapes was picked up in the Virginia mountains, and the long drive back to Atlanta (and careful climate-controlled storage) was all accomplished.
Now, the Great Work truly begins. Hundreds of past programs must be baked in a special oven, run off on the machine, and digitized so we all may hear them again. It’s slow, painstaking, expensive work.
So many of you have been so very generous over the years, we all want to express our profound gratitude, and let you know you made all this possible up to now.
If you find it in you heart to help us preserve future shows (from the past!), just let us know what kind of program speaks to you, and we will match you up.
And, as always, thank you.
